-how did you get into hardcore
I got into heavier bands through reading the thank you lists in punk CD’s. At about 13, I changed schools and went from listening to hip hop to hanging out with skateboarders, and borrowing tapes and videos from mates, and that got me into Pennywise, and then No Fun At All and Millencolin, and from reading the thank you lists of those bands, got onto Sick of it All and 59 Times the Pain, and it sort of went from there. I started my first band from a 28 Days (the band) email list, and from there got into heavier music even more (Refused, Raised Fist and the like) and started going to local shows from that too.
-in name in blood were around for quite a few years, how did that band come about
I was looking for a band after the last one I was in ended (Snubfighter), and my girlfriend (now wife) knew Corey, and I liked what his playlist looked like (I knew this from seeing his CD picks in Missing Link), and I asked him to come and jam with some mates, and that’s how it all got together really. I went to school with Erle and Leith, and I knew Damien from playing with his pop punk band down in Seaford (on the peninsula) somewhere a year or so earlier. We jammed out a couple songs, and it all went from there. We were called The Setup at the beginning, but changed the name to In Name and Blood because there were so many bands called The Setup already hahaha. The name In Name and Blood comes from the last Murder City Devils full length. The line up changed a few times, and I was very happy with the songs we were writing when the band ended.
-you guys were very metal sounding for a hardcore band, how influanced were you guys by the gothenberg sound, darkest hour and himsa
I don’t know if those things directly influenced the band in the beginning. We just wrote songs that 5 dudes from different backgrounds and musical tastes wrote haha. When Ashby joined the band, the Gothenburg sound did become an influence, mostly from his drumming, and we all loved Darkest Hour anyways, so it did sort of start to come through.
-after the demise of inab you started the seduction, which is more akin to bands like converge, the chariot and norma jean, how did it start
I had known Shane who played guitar in The Seduction for a while, as he had hit me up to do some designs for INAB that we never ended up using. In fact, the band had a singer before me, and they were supposed to play our last show as their first show, but the singer booked a gig the night before and some crappy little venue down the road, so I booted them off the show (as a matter of principal), and they ended up kicking him out, and I came on. So it wasn’t really my band to start with. I have always loved those bands, and In Name and Blood played with Norma Jean and Everytime I Die a couple of times.
-you have now started midnight funeral records, have you always wanted to start a label? are you only down for doing vinyl
I have actually worked on a couple of labels before this one. I did bits and pieces with Nigel @ Trial & Error (I didn’t do any actual record releasing stuff, but I ran the website and took over the distro), and then I did Sightline Records with my wife, which released CD’s for The Rivalry, The Abandonment, and a couple others.
With Midnight Funeral Music, I wanted to focus on the stuff I loved, and on the format which I love. So I work with Vinyl, and on the odd occasion, Tape. I see no need for CD’s, and I view them as a dead format. Being a record collector, means that I do love the format, but I also love the mechanics behind the pressing of an actual record, and how it actually works. It all amazes me.
- do you feel you might do another band?
I will. I don’t know if it will be a band that plays live much, and if so, I don’t ever see myself being in a touring band again. I actually love to spend time travelling with my wife, and I don’t need to be crammed into a car/van with a bunch of weirdos anymore hahaha. If my mate Ben ends up moving to Melbourne, then Ben, Shane and myself will record something this year…
-what does midnight funeral have planned for 2012
So much! So far, I have the following out, or coming out soon: Pro Team – Our Wasteland 7”, Milhouse – Everything’s coming up… 7”, Marathon – I’ll never look at you the same way again 7”. The Seduction – Betrayed LP will finally be out this year, the Darren Gibson – Crosstown Motions LP is in the works, an Abraxis split 7” is happening and a bunch of other stuff too (most of which is in the planning stages, so I don’t want to talk about them just yet). I am hoping to do a Hazards 7” at some stage. A busy busy year…
-your quite the record collector am i right? whats your favorite record you own
I do have an OK collection, and a favourite is always a tough one… Maybe my colour copy of Mindsnares Hanged Wrists slit…
